Are you concerned about your dental health, or that of your child? Would you like to give your smile or your child’s smile an extra burst of protection? Ask us about dental sealants. Dental sealant is a thin, plastic material that is painted over the chewing surfaces of the back teeth to protect them from decay.

Why are dental sealants used?
The molars and premolars have deep fissures, or grooves, on their chewing surfaces. Because of this, they can be very difficult to clean properly. Plaque and food particles can gather in the grooves, causing decay. Dental sealant can be used to shield these areas from plaque and food particles.

Who can benefit from dental sealants?
Dental sealants are usually placed on a child’s molars and premolars as soon as they grow in. However, adults with no decay or dental work in the back teeth can also benefit from dental sealants.

How are dental sealants placed?
The back teeth are first thoroughly cleaned and dried by Drs. Labbe and Staat or our hygienist. An acidic solution is then placed on the chewing surface of the molars and premolars to roughen them. This allows for an ideal bonding process. The teeth are dried again and then the dental sealant is painted on by our dentists. The material is allowed to cure.

How long do dental sealants last?
Dental sealants often last for several years before they need to be reapplied by our dentists. The sealants will be examined during regular dental visits.
